The new 4-player coop in Gears of War 3 allows you and three other friends to band together to persevere through 5 Acts (comprising 31 chapters) of the campaign mode. If you have selected your trusted three friends, then it’s all about pushing through the campaign mode once or twice (depending on your comfortable level of expertise). Personally, I believe in going through the campaign first in normal mode just so I know what to expect, before attempting again on a higher level of difficulty. Sounds like what we’ve been doing for past games, but my view is the Gears of War 3 single player campaign is configured to kick all your four asses on Insane Mode.
Even if you have ‘mad skillz’ in Gears, the opposition in Gears is not always the type you can take down with headshots, such as the Lambent versions of Locusts and creatures that let explode and cause its imulsion liquid to hurt you, new enemies that hurl projectiles that cause major damage and the intense firefights within closed quarters. It’s like they took everything they have that’s relevant within the chapter and have it thrown at you (not going to mention spoilers).
Perhaps this does not concern the Gears of War elites but let’s face it, most of us are not. And if you belong to the workforce just like me, you have less time playing and the evenings you spend recently and in future playing through campaign mode on Insane is just going to get challenging and you are probably going to swear a lot.
I believe the people at Epic Games know this and they have made a little tweak to the campaign mode. I’m not sure whether this is announced, but I had just learnt yesterday that during campaign mode, each of the players can choose a different level of difficulty. In a match that I was playing yesterday with gamertags Razgriz Fllaga and Tanker08, each of us was playing on various levels of difficulty. They were playing Insane and Hardcore modes respectively, and since I did not input a choice in time (must be off-screen at that time), the system put me on Normal Mode by default.
While we were replaying the first Act, I notice that I had a breezy time with the campaign while my teammates kept getting downed and died a lot, causing a lot of ‘Objective Failed’ screens.
If this theory is true, then it means the only way to run through the 31 chapters and die less is to have at least one of the players playing on Normal Mode. This person would be the ‘medic’ of the team or help to take the team through the difficult levels all the way to the end. This means that if you’re all gunning for the achievements of completing the campaign in Insane Mode, chances are you will have to replay the missions many times. For example, after helping three friends finish through Insane Mode, one or all of them would have to replay the mission in Normal mode with me and help me attain my Insane Mode achievement. And I’m sure, some other friends will call on you to assist them too.
That’s a lot of commitment to distract you and your friends away from the addictive and badass Gears of War 3 multiplayer modes, which we all know how addictive they are! Times like this make me grateful for having less than 100 people in my Friends List.
So really, Seriously, how far to the end would you go, for your Brothers?
