While locally-produced movie DVD library continue to grow, there are not many that contain subtitles in local languages, namely Malay and Tamil.
Since over a decade, the number of non-Chinese viewers of Chinese serial dramas have increased so there’s no reason to ignore those who may enjoy Chinese movies but are unable to understand English.
Case in study – my mum. Ever since I bought “Where Got Ghost?” movie on DVD, she’s been playing it often. What attracted her to the movie is the “hor-medy” or comedy involving Chinese dialects and the familiar backdrop of our hometown.
She was particularly emotional to the third story of the movie, which is an extension to the plight of the story of the three brothers from “Money No Enough” instalment. This led to us watching the movie “Money No Enough II” which provided the necessary prologue.
Fortunately, there are Malay subtitles otherwise we would have to explain and narrate to her while watching.
I also broaden the search to overseas movies and so far only one Hong Kong movie “Kung Fu Chefs” has Indonesian subtitles, which is close enough. The subtitles work is not perfect but at least it helps my mum to understand most of the plot.
Today, I found another comedy film that has Malay subtitles – “Just Follow Law”. It wasn’t as funny as “Where Got Ghost?” but at least there are familiar actors and actresses.
I also found another Jack Neo “One More Chance” which starred the same actors. It didn’t have Malay subtitles but I went for it because I have not watched it.
Looking forward to more Chinese movies with subtitles that cater to non-Chinese/non-English-literate viewers…
